MANIFESTING THE IMPOSSIBLE

Return of the Commanding Heights

This essay presents a set of narratives and riffs for understanding the contemporary redistribution of economic power, arguing that the pre-eminent 21st-century "commanding heights" are no longer driven by industrial sectors like energy or defense in silos but innovation, and more precisely - what we call "hyper-platforms." These entities, which function as platforms that generate their own ecosystems, represent a new architecture of power in the global economy. We analyze the paradigm shift from pipe scale (internal value creation) to platform scale (ecosystem orchestration) and identify the core characteristics of hyper-platforms, including extreme centripetal force and data-driven network effects. The analysis is contextualized within a new geopolitical reality defined by "deliberative dirigisme", a pragmatic turn toward strategic state-market coordination, necessitated by the end of laissez-faire globalism and the rise of multipolar competition whereby state actors must support and protect their vital economic sectors in a world of great power competition.
